Ultrasound-based navigation system incorporating preoperative planning for liver surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
An overview of the current status of the development of our navigation system for resection of liver tumours is given. The system is based on intraoperative 3D ultrasound volumes for image-guided navigation of surgical instruments. It is also possible to perform a virtual 3D planning of the tumour resection and to non-rigidly register these preoperative models to the intraoperative ultrasound volume.

Augmenting Intraoperative 3D Ultrasound with Preoperative Models for Navigation in Liver Surgery
Organ deformation between preoperative image data and the patient in the OR is the main obstacle for using surgical navigation systems in liver surgery. Our approach is to provide accurate navigation via intraoperative 3D ultrasound. These ultrasound data are augmented with preoperative anatomical models and planning data as an important additional orientation aid for the surgeon. We present an...
متن کاملPerspectives of computer assisted resection planning and navigation for hepatic resections in the elderly
Background Recent advances in image-based computer assistance in the last ten years allow computerized preoperative simulations, giving a lot of advantages in the preoperative surgical planning of resections. Preoperative simulation represents the prerequisite for navigated liver surgery. The aim of this study is to describe elementary technical aspects of a navigated approach to liver resectio...
متن کاملLaparoscopic Navigated Liver Resection: Technical Aspects and Clinical Practice in Benign Liver Tumors
Laparoscopic liver resection has been performed mostly in centers with an extended expertise in both hepatobiliary and laparoscopic surgery and only in highly selected patients. In order to overcome the obstacles of this technique through improved intraoperative visualization we developed a laparoscopic navigation system (LapAssistent) to register pre-operatively reconstructed three-dimensional...
متن کاملTowards higher precision in instrument guided liver surgery: Automatic registration of 3D ultrasound with pre-operative MeVis-CT
Purpose Liver cancer is the 5 most common cancer and shows poor prognosis. Surgical removal of liver tumours, the only existing curative treatment, can merely be used in 10-20% of the case. Increasing surgical precision is a key-challenge to give more patients access to a potentially curative treatment. Recent progress in computer science enables the use of instrument guidance systems for open ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Visualization of Preoperative Planning Models and Intraoperative 2D Ultrasound for Liver Surgery
This paper introduces new techniques for simultaneous visualization of preoperative planning models and intraoperative 2D ultrasound for open liver surgery. The driving motivation for our work is to improve the visual presentation of a moving ultrasound plane within a complex, interweaving three-dimensional model of hepatic vascular structures. Major drawbacks of existing systems are occlusions...
